Eight Cape Elizabeth High School students have won awards in the regional portion of the annual Scholastic Arts Awards, a national arts competition.
The competition is the longest running visual arts awards program in the country. It gives students the opportunity to compete on a national level for scholarships and cash prizes.
This year, students from 52 Maine high schools and eleven middle schools competed. The Maine College of Art has donated several awards, including scholarships to its Saturday school and its early college program
The students’ work is on exhibit at the Maine College of Art in Portland through Jan. 22. Four Cape students won Gold awards and now they will compete nationally for a share of $1,000,000 in awards and scholarships.
The following Cape students won awards: Calvin Klopp, silver award for a ceramic piece; Whitney Legge, gold award for photography; Chelsea Stephenson, gold award for a self portrait collage; Elise Bothel, silver award for painting and drawing; Aschel Gregory, painting; Alison Meehan, gold award for a self portrait collage; Max Bartlett, silver award for drawing and Tina Shaw, gold award for a ceramic piece.
An awards ceremony will be held Jan. 21 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Maine College of Art on Congress Street in Portland.
Cape sophomore Calvin Klopp won a silver award for this ceramic piece titled “Spike Pot.”
Cape senior Elise Bothel won a silver award for her piece called “Lemonade.”
Cape senior Alison Meehan won a gold award for her self portrait collage called “Out of the Shadows.”
Cape senior Max Bartlett won a silver award for his “bike study” drawing.
Cape senior Tina Shaw won a gold award for her ceramic piece called “Diamonds on the sole of her shoes.”
Cape senior Whitney Legge won a gold award for her photograph “Peace.”
