The Scarborough High School soccer boosters hosted our first dinner, dance and silent auction on Saturday, March 4, at St. Maximilian Kolbe. Thanks to the tireless efforts of its committee members – Jack Cowie, Sue Curtis, Patti Carlson, Dan Lambert, Leah Ledoux, Linda Heath, Bob Philbrick, Maliea Brackett, Kelly Hilmer, Sue Nakanyshi, Joanne Blanchard, Debbie Tait, Ron Broadhurst, Trish Cowie and Kelly Slavin – it was a huge success.
David Turin, of David’s Restaurant in Portland, cooked an outstanding four course meal that everyone was raving about by nights end. The Scarborough High School Jazz Ensemble played their music during the cocktail hour, and they were fantastic. Mike Theriault of Encore Productions provided dance music after dinner, and he had many on the dance floor the whole time. Kim Carter, from One Stop Party Shoppe, helped us out tremendously with all our rental needs. Hannaford Bros., a major sponsor of this event, provided a good portion of the food that David used for our meal. We bought it right in our own Scarborough Hannaford store.
To all of the local businesses who donated items for our silent auction – Dr. Mark Buttarazzi, Key Bank, Contours Express, Amy Hardesty, Andrea Pastore, Fieldings Oil, DiMitri’s Restaurant, La-Z-Boy, Quirk Oil/Pine State Energy, Portland SeaDogs, Virtual Sales Group, Marriott at Sable Oaks, Sable Oaks Golf Club, Lifestyles Gym, and Driving Forces – a huge thank you. Our silent auction was a fantastic success, and we made a good deal of money on those items.
I also can’t give enough praise to our 24 soccer players who came, all dressed in white shirts and black pants, to help David in the kitchen, serve appetizers and dinner for this non-buffet style meal, clean tables and keep the evening running smoothly. Everyone was proud to see this group of 16 and 17 year olds act so professionally and be so courteous to everyone there. To the adult volunteers who came to help supervise the soccer players and help out all around, they were just as great. And last but certainly not least, thank you to everyone who attended this event. We, obviously, could not have had a successful event without you in attendance. We hope to make this an annual fundraiser, and if Saturday night was any indication of how well it was received in the community, you will definitely see us next year at the Second Annual Kick the Winter Blues soccer gala.
