The city of South Portland emerged victorious Wednesday morning in its bid for the National Guard Armory building.

The city of South Portland and RBA South Portland LLC were the only two bidders for the 2.7 acre property that was part of the Museum of Glass and Ceramics bankruptcy liquidation. A minimum bid of $648,250 was required. South Portland bid $650,000.

RBA South Portland LLC was bidding for the Children’s Theater of Maine, which wanted to turn the building located at the entrance to the Casco Bay Bridge into a theater and join their three branches under one roof.

Though Richard Shinay, the lawyer representing RBA South Portland LLC, said last week his client was prepared to counter-bid the city, he said his client decided against it. “They made a business decision,” he said.

However, he said, should the city council decide not to buy the building, RBA South Portland still has a contract to buy the property for $625,000.

South Portland Mayor Maxine Beecher expects that the council will vote to buy the property at a special council meeting Monday at 5 p.m. at City Hall.

“I don’t have any doubts that this is going to fly,” she said.
