Boys Hockey
2006 record: 16-5-2
Coach: Jay Mazur
Season highlight: “I would have to say tying the game up in the Western Maine Finals at the Cumberland County Civic Center with five seconds to go in the third period to send it into to overtime. We beat some very well coached and disciplined teams this year, but that would have to be the highlight. The kids were excited and you could see it in their play after that tying goal.”
Seniors: Jason Barden, Mark Beidleman, Billy McHugh, Blake Lucier, Dan McGovern
Awards: None awarded yet at press time
Coach’s comment: “The kids had a solid season and seemed to put everything together on the ice. We were fortunate to roll out three great lines and three sets of defenseman on a consistent basis, which led to us wearing teams down with our speed and forechecking. We had two solid goaltenders in net that seemed to push each other in practice. The five seniors listed above will be sorely missed, but have left their imprint on the future of Scarborough Hockey for years to come.”
Boys Basketball
2006 record: 5-14
Coach: Matt Townsend
Season highlight: Qualifying for the Western Maine tournament as the 11th seed
Seniors: Matt Libby, Charles Norton, Jake Oliver, Taylor Sabo and Matt Wahrer
Awards: Jordan Hicks – all conference honorable mention; Taylor Sabo – selected to compete in the SMAA senior all-star game
Coach’s comment: “We were very close – two overtime losses and a three-point – loss – to achieving our team goal of wins this year. We really wanted to get a chance to compete on the Civic Center floor, but couldn’t beat a very good Biddeford team at their place for that chance. With four starters and our top six scorers back next year, we are very excited about getting back on the court next winter.”
Girls Basketball
2006 record: 5-13

Wrestling
2006 record: 4-14
Coach: Ryan Hutchins
Season highlight: Team wins over Cheverus, Traip, Windham and Portland. Also, the school racked up its first two tournament champions. Brandon Carroll won the Bonny Eagle Invitational at 171, while Tony Sciarra won the Southern Maine Classic at 103. Sciarra also became the school’s first wrestler to go to and place in the state tournament.
Seniors: None
Awards: Tony Sciarra – team MVP and coach’s award; Patrick Kelly – most improved
Coach’s comment: “In spite of our record, we improved a great deal this season. When the matches that were actually
wrestled(not forfeited) are looked at, our record
was 8-10. Also, with only six wrestlers competing, we had fifteen individual place winners in six tournaments, as opposed to four last year. With all six wrestlers returning for next year, our next goal is to increase our numbers to become even more competitive in the future.”
Boys Indoor Track
2006 record: 4-7, second at Southwesterns, Class A state runner up
Coach: Derek Veilleux
Season highlights: “We battled each week in the Expo and usually came up on the wrong side of win column, mainly due to number of athletes on the other teams. What we did do was have many of the top performances in numerous events, what we lacked in quantity, we more than held our own with quality. School Records were set by the following athletes this season: DMR (Brecht Moulin, Brian Van Dam, Tyler Nelson, Chris Harmon); 1000 meter, Brecht Moulin; Jr. 40- Brecht Moulin; Jr. 600 Brect Moulin; Intermediate 40, Brian Van Dam; Intermediate 200, Brian Van Dam; Intermediate, 400 Brian Van Dam; Senior 40, James Mina”
Seniors: Brian Van Dam, Tyler Nelson, Chris Harmon, Kevin Penley, James Mina, Josh Flynn, Alex Hennings, Tim Erwin
Awards: Josh Flynn – coach’s award; Brian Van Dam – team MVP
Coach’s comment: “The season was filled with its ups and downs due to injuries to a couple of our key athletes, but the team never stopped working hard and we got better as a team each week. The team stepped it up once it was championship time. The conference meet was a great confidence builder heading into the state meet. Our guys came ready to compete at the State meet and gave their best effort. They upheld the strong tradition of Scarborough track and field.”

Coach: William Stone
Season highlights: Winning at second straight Southwestern title, finishing third at the state meet
Seniors: Carrie Chykaliuk, Kelly Clark, Jacqueline Maples, Laura Wood
Awards: Kelly Clark – coach’s award
Coach’s comment: “Both teams did very well. I am really proud of our diving team and it’s grown since we started three years ago (despite not having any facilities). Our team competes with other teams who have pools and diving boards at their disposal. Our kids pay a lot of money to be able to participate and raise a lot of money through fundraising. This on top of studying and going to practice late at night. They all do a fantastic job and our seniors should be praised for doing it for four years.”
