In a matchup of two teams that could be competing for the state title in June, the Bonny Eagle Boys’ track team won a close meet against Westbrook at Cheverus, 94 to 87.5. Cheverus finished with 84.5 points and Noble had 23.

Bonny Eagle was led by Ben Roy who finished second in the 100 meter, long jump and triple jump, and first in the 200 meter. Roy, the state indoor hurdle champion and state record holder, spent Monday afternoon working on his speed instead. He will focus on the hurdle events later in the season.

Despite missing Roy, the Scots’ still scored well in the hurdle events. Greg Gadbois lead the way, winning the 110 meter hurdles in 15.7 seconds and the 300 meter hurdles in 41.2 seconds. Nate Doehler finished second in the 110 meter hurdles and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles.

Scots’ coach Greg Wilkinson used this meet as a way of training his athletes for the events they will run at the state meet in June. Eric Favreau won the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:48.3, but will focus on a shorter race later in the season (the 800 meter). Distance runner Evan Embrey worked on his speed by finishing fifth in the 400 meter run with a time of 56.6. According to Wilkinson, “you can’t run the kids in the same event every day.”

Others leading the way for the Scots were Alan Cox in the race walk and Murphy Doughty in the 3200 meter run.

The Westbrook boys team was lead by David Quigley, who won all four of his events. Quigley set personal best performances at the High Jump (6 feet 2 inches) and the 400 meter (53.7 seconds). He also won the javelin with a throw of 142 feet, 1 inch and ran the third leg of the winning 4X 400 meter relay team.

Alex Baillargeon ran the anchor leg for that relay by running a 52 second 400 meter. Baillargeon also won the 800 meter with a time of 2:07.3 and placed third in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump.

The two other members of the Westbrook 4X400 relay team also had strong individual performances. Robbie Preston finished second in the 200 meter, fourth in the triple jump, and third in the 100. (Due to a scorers error, Preston was initially recorded as finishing fifth.)

Erik Born showed up late to the meet because he was taking an Advanced Placement English exam, but contributed nicely to the Blazes’ effort. Born finished second in the 300 meter hurdles and third in the triple jump, in addition to running the 4X400 relay.

Distance runner Aaron Tanguay ran a personal best time in the 1600 meter run (4:56.6). He also placed fourth in the 3200 meter run. In the throws, Patrick Walsh scored well, placing fourth in the shot put and second in the discus.

Both teams will be in the hunt for a state title in June. Wilkinson is looking to develop some of his younger athletes during the season. His team will need the points from the loss of weight thrower John Weichman, who didn’t come out for the team this spring.

Westbrook will continue to get stronger with the hard-working athletes it has, trying to qualify as many athletes as they can for the state meet.
