In Windham, and surrounding towns including Gray and New Gloucester, Meals on Wheels are delivered every day of the week by many volunteer drivers, to frail, elderly residents. For some, this daily visit is the only visit they receive, so the arrival of the volunteer is very welcome.

Government funding for this vital program has not kept up with the economy and in some years, has been cut. This means that those involved with the program must conduct fundraising to make sure that no one who needs a nutritious meal, and is either housebound or unable to prepare a meal, will go hungry.

For the 2005-2006 year, the total to be raised locally was $6,100. Some funds have been raised, but another $4,500 will assure a daily meal to all those who need it.

Donations in any amount may be made to Meals on Wheels, and mailed to the Windham Senior Dining Club, 124 Tandberg Trail, Windham, Maine 04062, attention of Virginia Billings. For more information, call Virginia at 892-3891, weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
