Miles Bartlett won a pair of events and Kevin Floster took first in another to lead Lake Region to a third-place finish at the Class B state track meet Saturday at Mt. Desert Island High School.

Rain fell throughout the meet, just as it did on the Class A and C meets, which were both suspended and moved to this Saturday. But – with the exception of the pole vault – the Class B athletes soldiered on, even as the wind picked up and blew their tents around.

The Lakers collected 48 points, tied with Cape Elizabeth and Winslow, and behind Waterville (79) and York (69). Among girls’ teams, York (103) took first while Lake Region finished in the middle of the 24-team field with 22 points.

Bartlett, a senior who won the mile and two-mile at the indoor state meet, broke the tape in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs.

“During the 1,600 the rain wasn’t so bad,” Bartlett said. “In the 3,200 it picked up. The wind was coming at you down the final stretch.”

Classmate Floster, the 800 indoor champ as well as the defending outdoor champ, won that event again. The duo also teamed up with Keegan Eldridge and Jake Moore to set a track record winning the 4 x 800 relay.

“The 4 x 800 was the first event,” said Bartlett, who will be running for UMaine in the fall. “I got some shower caps and we put our shoes in them and they were completely dry when the race began and everyone else was soaked. Of course, 200 meters into the first lap we were soaked, too.”

Bartlett, Floster and Moore joined Maurice MacDougall for a third-place finish in the 4 x 400.

The girls quartet of Renee Nicholas, Sarah Hale, ZZ Leighton and Krysti Leach won the 4 x 100 relay, while Hale took second in the 100 and Nicholas was fourth in the long jump.

The meet was completed Monday when the pole vault was held at Winslow High School.
