Two South Portland men were arrested Saturday afternoon and charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon after witnesses reported three cars drag racing on I-95.

According to Trooper Robert Burke of the Maine State Police, Dennis Carver, 20 and Daniel Williams, 19, were arrested after Williams attempted to pass Carver, skidded out of control and hit a Toyota SUV carrying a family of five.

The SUV flipped over and landed in the middle of the highway. All family members were safely removed from the car, though the adult driver injured her shoulder and a nine-year-old passenger hurt her ankle.

“Luckily they all had their seatbelts on, because if they didn’t it could have been a lot worse,” said Burke.

According to Burke, witness report seeing a third maroon sports car leave the scene.

Witnesses say that the cars were driving around 100 mph, erratically changing lanes and weaving through heavy traffic.

“We are seeing a higher number of young adult males enamored with the ‘Fast and Furious’ type cars and seem to be duplicating what they see in the movies,” Burke said. “I’m not sure they understand the recklessness of what they do and the danger their actions pose, not only to themselves, but to other drivers.”

The men were also charged with improper plates and permitting unlawful use of a vehicle after police noticed that Carver had one of Williams’s plates attached to his car since Carver’s car was not registered. Carver was also recently summonsed for criminal speeding.

Both men denied any wrongdoing, police said.
