After months of planning and several changes, Hospice of Southern Maine has gotten approval to build a new center in Scarborough on Hunnewell Road.

At Monday’s Planning Board meeting, Bud Hanson was the only board member to vote against the hospice. “I don’t believe this type of commercial space should be in this community,” said Hanson.

The board placed conditions on the construction of the center as part of the approval. No construction will begin before 7 a.m. or continue after 5 p.m., five days a week.

“I think you’ve worked long and hard to meet our requirements,” said Susan Auglis, the board’s chairwoman. “I’m pleased that you’ve chosen Scarborough.”

Besides limiting the construction schedule, Hospice also plans to reduce lighting during the night to the bare minimum for staff and visitor safety, as well as planting larger and more trees as a buffer between the hospice and residents.
