Windham’s 11-year-old all-stars led until the bottom of the sixth inning, when two runs resulted in walk-off, 3-2 victory for Scarborough in a District 6 Little League baseball nail-bitter Saturday at South Portland.

Holding onto a 2-1 lead after two innings, Windham used strong pitching and solid defense to hold off Scarborough rallies in the third, fourth and fifth before finally succumbing in the sixth inning.

Ben Dionne pitched a complete game for Windham.

“It was a great pitched game,” Windham coach Bill Whiting said. “We had some great plays out in the field.”

In an attempt to force a mistake by Windham’s defense, Scarborough tried playing small ball in the fourth and fifth.

“We were bunting because their fielders weren’t coming in when we were showing bunt,” Scarborough coach Dan Kelly said. “We were testing them out a little bit, but their catcher was making nice plays. They were fielding exceptionally well all day.”

Catcher Jack Herzig threw out a would-be base stealer to end the fourth. In the fifth inning he received a perfect throw from center fielder Derrick Hammond, tagging out what would have been the tying run at the plate.

Left fielder Cody Miller made a beautiful running catch for the first out of the fifth.

However, Scarborough hit the ball where the fielders weren’t in the sixth. Two singles and a walk to load the bases were followed by a single to center field that scored two, ending the game.

“I tip my hat to Scarborough,” Whiting said. “They came up swinging the bat in the last inning and put together a rally. It was a tight, well-played game. I’m proud of the effort from my kids.”

Windham was eliminated from the tournament Sunday with a loss to South Portland National.
