With Windham Heritage Day this Saturday, do you ever wonder about Windham’s history?

Robert MacInnis, 71,

Perennial summer visitor

“I’m a real estate broker in Massachusetts and I hate to see what’s happening in this area. I’m disappointed in the corner of routes 115 and 302. The whole area is black topped. It’s sad. Heritage Day is a great idea but we probably won’t have many more of them because the buildings will be gone. There’s too much development. It’s too commercial.”

Jenny Libby, 57, Hollis

“Yeah, I wonder where it originated and if it was part of another town, or if it was independent.”

“When I was a kid and we’d drive through Windham to Portland, there was a green water tower in Windham on the left going down Route 302. And that was about it. Certain things stick out in my mind. Now, it’s like South Portland, North.”

Shirley James, 72, Windham

“Thirty-five years ago, when we first built up here, it wasn’t that bad. It was nice. But it’s gotten really bad in the past 10 years. I don’t think they’re fair to the taxpayers. We’ve got so many damn houses up here with two to three kids each. That school wasn’t necessary. The one time I was happy was when Lane Hiltunen rose up against the personal property tax. He got the tax assessor to resign. That was great.”

Shawn Dowen, 19, Hudson, Mass.

“I’ve been coming up here since I was 4 years old. I haven’t wondered about the heritage but certainly the development has changed.”

“No, I look forward. Windham’s history is changing at break-neck speed and it doesn’t look like it’ll slow down any time soon.”

Vicki Drew, 42, Windham

“As a kid we used to come up here camping each summer to a campground on Sebago Lake owned by the Manchester family. And we’d head to the drive-in in North Windham to watch Disney movies. As I watch Windham develop today I think back to when Windham was a tiny town, before the stores and traffic came in.”
