The Cape Elizabeth task force addressing the Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights (TABOR) initiative on the November ballot will meet Wednesday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. at the town hall.
Larry Benoit, a member of Citizens United to Protect Our Public Safety, Schools and Community, spoke against TABOR at the group’s Aug. 9 meeting. According to TABOR Task Force co-Chairwoman Janet McLaughlin, Benoit said TABOR would not work because it is all formula based and will hurt schools, seniors and communities.
McLaughlin said the next meeting won’t have a speaker, instead, the group plans to review the information it has already received. “Basically we want to discuss the issues the task force has tabulated so far,” she said.
Maine residents will vote on the TABOR initiative in November. Colorado voted to enact a program similar to the one proposed in Maine in 1992 and remains the only state with one. In 1995, Colorado voted to suspend the program for five years.
TABOR deals with a town’s tax base and rates. The program has a formula and a number based on population, resident revenue and a number of other factors that determine a town’s tax rate.
