There was a happy ending for all involved with the escape of a police dog near the Windham/Gorham line on Monday.
The dog, named Cit (Pronounced “Seat”) and Maine State Police Trooper Greg Stevens were reunited late Wednesday night after the dog’s two-and-a-half days on the run.
A resident spotted the dog off the Wescott Road in Gorham, and troopers and canine handlers from the Windham Correctional Facility responded immediately to the area.
Stevens used a police cruiser’s public-address system to call his dog who came bounding out of a nearby sand pit. Cit was unharmed, but hungry.
Stevens had returned early from vacation to look for his dog after it bolted from a Windham kennel Monday morning. He planned to continue his vacation today and Cit was going with him. Cit is a 4-year-old German Shepherd trained for tracking and drug work and has been Stevens’ partner for three years.
