With the deadline approaching, few Scarborough incumbents are choosing to seek re-election.

Of the three school board members up for re-election, both Jackie Perry and David Beneman said they will not run. Robert Mitchell, who was unavailable for comment, had not taken out nomination papers as of Monday.

There are also three vacancies on the town council, and only incumbent Carol Rancourt is running. Robert Patch is ending his term. Steve Ross, council chairman, is moving out of Scarborough and will resign on Nov. 1.

As of Tuesday, four other residents had filed to run for town council. They are Everil Perreault, Richard J. Sullivan, Ronald Ahlquist and Dave Dedian.

Rancourt said she thinks it is important to run, since there appears to be such a low number of council candidates. “I don’t see a lot of people beating down the door, which is very sad. Part of it can be people’s fear of the atmosphere between the board and council, and sadly, I can understand it.”

Perreault said one of her goals is to get more people involved with their local government. “I certainly have a strong interest in the growth of Scarborough,” she said.

Ahlquist will be running for a one-year seat on the council, and said he is ready to jump in without too much catching up.

“I could go in there as a pinch hitter and try to help the town out,” he said.

Both Dedian and Sullivan were unavailable for comment.

On the school board, only Eric and Jodie Lenardson have filed nomination papers (see story, Page 1).

Perry said she will not run due to frustrations over bad relations with the council.

“I’ve just had it,” she said. “I’m not going to fight with the town council any more. The school board is elected to do a job, and the council is continually second guessing and criticizing.”

There are also two open spots on the Scarborough Sanitary District board, and both the clerk Nicola Rico and the chairman Ben Viola have filed their papers.

Candidates have until 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 6 to file nomination papers with at least 25 signatures. The papers are available at the clerk’s office in town hall.
