There have been several marijuana busts in the Lakes Region this year. What do you think can be done to fight drug use?
Kim Elliot, 35, Standish
“There’s too much leniency in every state. You give a little and people will take advantage, and it’ll get out of hand. And it’s unfortunate because good people, who need the marijuana for medical reasons, won’t end up getting it and will suffer for it.”
Delaina Burnell, 22, Standish
“I think more or less starting it a young age would be beneficial. I don’t think the DARE programs are used as much or as intensely as they should be. And, also, they should be extended into high school where they would be more helpful because that’s when kids are most likely to use drugs.”
Linwood Brackett, 74, Bridgton
“It’s kind of a hard thing to put your finger on – how to solve it. Good surveillance with a helicopter is about the only way you could do it. But that costs money. The buddy system, where neighbors report what they see, is also a good idea.”
Craig Reum, 20, Naples
“There’s really not much you can do. Everything they’ve tried doesn’t seem to be affecting their thought process.”
David Rand, 26, Naples
“None of the penalties seem to work. They learn from their own mistakes when they’re in jail so they don’t get caught again.”
John Carver, 41, Raymond
“Harsher penalties. And that goes for all crimes, not just drugs. Harsher penalties is the cure to any stopping any crime. That’s the reason crime has been increasing in recent years, because the penalties are decreasing.”
