In a sobriety checkpoint set up by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, five people were arrested between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. Saturday night at the junction of routes 302 and 85 in Raymond.
“We stopped over 600 vehicles,” said Chief Deputy Kevin Joyce. “Out of those 600 vehicles we arrested five people, four for OUI (operating under the influence) and one for OAS (operating after suspension).
Those arrested for operating under the influence were: Julie Weymouth, 52, of Gorham; John Desmond, 48, of Quincy, Mass.; Phil Allen, 31, of Raymond; and Jarod Geary, 25, of Portland.
Peter Bricshitto, 40, of Portland was arrested for operating after suspension.
Ten Cumberland County Sheriff’s deputies participated in the sobriety check, which was funded by a grant from the Bureau of Highway Safety.
It is part of a national campaign by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration to target impaired operators throughout the United States. The theme of this year’s campaign is, “if you are over the limit, you are under arrest.”
The sobriety checks are set up in different areas throughout Cumberland County and will be ongoing.
“There will be another checkpoint somewhere in Cumberland County within the next seven days,” said Joyce. “People should not be driving under the influence, unfortunately they do.”
