Where were you when you first heard of the Sept. 11 attacks?

Ken Reed, 31, Windham

“I was asleep and my wife called and woke me up and told me someone flew planes into the World Trade Center. I said something like ‘you’re nuts.’ And then I got up and on every channel, there it was. I couldn’t take my eyes off the TV.”

Renee LeClaire, 17, Windham

“I was at break time sitting at a table with my friends at middle school. We heard someone talking about it but we really didn’t believe it. When we got back to class, my teacher turned on the TV. I remember some obnoxious guy in my class saying, ‘I hope they don’t get Yankee Stadium.’ I just went to see the movie and it was very emotional.”

“We were on Cow Island on Lake Winnepesaukee. We came over by boat to Wolfeboro and there was a work crew there. And there was a radio and everyone was listening. No one was working. We asked, ‘What’s going on?’ and they told us. We were astonished. We quickly went into town and couldn’t find anyplace with a television except a restaurant which wasn’t open yet. But we stood in the doorway of the kitchen and watched with the crew that was preparing lunch.”

Sara Levasseur, 22, Naples

“I was a sophomore at Lake Region High School and I walked into my classroom and they had the TV on and I asked the teacher what movie we were watching and the teacher said it was live TV from New York. From that point on, I just sat down and watched.”

Patrick Schwartz, 26, Casco

“I was active duty in the Coast Guard in South Portland. I was mowing the lawn at the base and a couple people came out and told me to come inside and it was on the TV on the mess deck. We implemented security on the perimeter because we were unaware what was happening, the magnitude of the situation, that is.”

Kathy Lord, 51, Denmark

“I was prepping for lunch at Mollyockett Middle School when we heard it over the radio. That day changed my family forever because we’re a military family. My husband is in the 133rd Engineering Battalion and he went to Mosul, Iraq.”
