Phillips, Thompson engagement

Carl and Marcena Phillips of Gorham and David and Karlene Thompson of Kennebunk announce the engagement of their children, Andrew Phillips and Suzanne Thompson. Both are graduates of Gorham High School.

The wedding will be held in Gorham in June 16, 2007.

First lady to lunch at GMS

Karen Baldacci, Maine’s first lady, will join Gorham Middle School students for the school district’s fourth annual Maine Harvest Lunch on Wednesday, Sep. 20.

Students in kindergarten through Grade 8 will be served locally grown and produced food. The program is a joint effort of the Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District and the nutrition program at the Gorham School Department. During lunch each item will be identified by the farm that produced it.

The average bite of food travels 1,400 miles before reaching a plate, using 17 times more fossil fuel energy than food from local sources, according to a news release about the program.

GBCE family barbecue

The Gorham Business & Civic Exchange kicks off the season with its fourth annual family barbecue at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, at the Portland Faith Center on Elkins Road.

Jeremy Greene of The Art Guru will provide activities for children, and the there’ll be lots of door prizes. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided and those attending are asked to take a dish to share and a non-alcoholic beverage.

“This is a great opportunity to meet business people in the community socially, a real mix of business and pleasure,” said Trish Moulton, president of GB&CE.

The event will be held rain or shine.

Cossar honor society student

Kristina C. Cossar was inducted recently into the National Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society for first year students during fall convocation ceremonies at Western New England College in Springfield, Mass.

Cossar is majoring in sports management.

Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence.

Airbrush class at Art Guru

Jeremy Greene has announced that an airbrushing class for beginners gets under way at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, at The Art Guru on Main Street.

The cost of the four- to five-week course is $150 for those who already have an airbrush; $250 includes a kit with everything a student needs for the classes.

Perry Clark will be the instructor. Classes will be at least two hours long, Greene said.

USM dorm under construction

A new- $21 million dorm is under construction at the Gorham campus of the University of Southern Maine.

The new dorm will be five floors with a basement for utilities. It will house 296 students and is slated to open in September next year. The new dorm is taking shape and is on schedule, said Bob Caswell, a spokesman for the university.

It’s the first new dorm to open on the Gorham campus since Philippi Hall opened in 2001.

The university has 1,375 residents living in dorms this year on the Gorham campus.

A $1.5 million childcare center recently opened on campus.

School open-house reminder

As part of its 25th anniversary celebration, Narragansett School will host an open house from 5:45-7 p.m. today, Sept. 14, for students and their parents.

The school opened in September 1981.

The Gorham Woman’s Club will meet at 12:30 p.m., today, Sept. 14, at the First Parish Church.
