The Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church will sponsor its second Dog Blessing and Walk on Sunday, Oct. 1, from 1-2 p.m., in the church’s outdoor chapel.
The event will take place on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment.
At last fall’s inaugural event, 30 dogs participated and $589 was raised for the Humane Society of the United States to help care for pets displaced in Louisiana and Mississippi by Hurricane Katrina.
Once again this year, the Rev. Ruth Morrison will conduct the blessing, sharing a personal moment with each dog. Following the blessing, a half-mile and 1.5-mile walk will take place on the trails in the woods behind the church. Participants can choose their own distance.
Canine attendees will be invited to participate in several contests, including best dog costume, best dog trick, dog with the longest tail and dog with the loudest bark.
Apple cider and refreshments will be provided and each dog will receive a bandanna.
Donations will be accepted to benefit a Maine animal shelter.
The church is located at 280 Ocean House Road and the outdoor chapel is in the woods at the far end of the parking lot.
