‘Tis the season that more people need Meals on Wheels and that many volunteers delivering meals in Cumberland and York counties leave Maine for warmer climates.

Last year Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s volunteers delivered 172,923 meals. Volunteers spent 29,364 hours driving hot meals to people who have limited mobility to shop and prepare food.

“This program is a lifeline for seniors who are no longer able to prepare a nutritious meal,” said Larry Gross, executive director. “Without enough volunteers, our drivers don’t have time to spend with these folks who rarely have visitors.”

The need for volunteers is critical to deliver meals in the following communities: Kennebunk, Wells, Ogunquit, Sanford, Biddeford, Naples, Hollis, and Buxton. Call toll-free (877) 353-3771 for more information about volunteering or signing up for Meals on Wheels.
