The fifth-seeded Scarborough hockey team played one of its best games of the season at the most crucial moment of the season on Saturday afternoon at the Colisee in Lewiston. The Red Storm knocked off the West A top seeds from Falmouth by a 5-1 score to set up a regional final clash with Biddeford on Tuesday night at the Civic Center in Portland.

Falmouth took an unexpected 1-0 lead in the opening minute of play when a harmless slapshot trickled through the pads of Scarborough goalie Josh Larrabee. But the Red Storm did not panic and they played solid hockey at both ends of the ice the rest of the way.

Michael Dakers scored a short-handed goal for the Red Storm with 1:38 left in the first to tie the score at 1-1 giving the underdogs some much needed momentum.

Brent Mayo’s unassisted goal at 8:32 of the middle period turned out to be the game-winner and a goal by Ben Talbot (from Steve Cook and Dakers) with just 1:10 left in the second period turned out to be the back-breaker for Falmouth.

Dakers and Talbot each added an insurance goal in the third period while Larrabee was doing his part, stonewalling the Yachtsmen at the other end of the ice.
