Expanded Summer Reading Program Invites
Scarborough Residents to “Get a Clue @ the Library”
SCARBOROUGH – This year’s Summer Reading Program at the Scarborough Public Library takes its cue from the popularity of CSI themed programs and invites all readers to “Get a Clue @ the Library.” From June 21 through August 8, over 25 programs will be offered at the Library in addition to reading incentives in support of literacy for all ages. “We’ve increased this year’s summer programming significantly with events for early readers, YA or teen readers, and adult readers,” says Nancy Crowell, Library Director. “The summer event is a wonderful way for the Library to encourage community-wide reading throughout the summer, particularly to school aged children. Also, a generous donation from the Friends of the Library made it possible for us to offer great programs in support of the reading theme.”
Kristin Peto, Youth Services Librarian, is particularly excited about programs for teens. “We’ve always offered programs for our younger readers, but we wanted to offer events that would draw our teen readers in as well, so we created a CSI Scarborough theme for them,” says Peto. “Programs on paranormal sightings in Maine, actual crime scene investigations, and a fast paced demonstration by Scarborough’s K-9 Unit are confirmed. We’ve also invited Tod Brodeur, a national Frisbee champion, and Dana Bennett, a resident of Scarborough and national Yo-Yo champion, to do a combined performance and talk about the physics behind their skills – more of a “Get a Clue” about the physics behind these well-loved games.”
Peto confirms that there will be events for younger readers as well. “We’ve planned programs on ciphers and codes, a visit from two incredible Search and Rescue dogs, and the kids will create a Library weather station used to track weather clues throughout the summer.” Both age groups will also have the chance to use their acting and sleuthing skills to solve a crime in two Mystery Theater presentations.
The kids won’t have all the fun, however. Adults can also “Get a Clue @ the Library.” Adult Services Librarian, Catherine Morrison, is combing through the Library’s collection for titles on classic crimes, international intrigue, and Maine mysteries to create a reading list worth investigating.
The Summer Reading Program will kick off on Thursday, June 21st with two presentations by Chewonki Foundation’s Batmobile. The program will end on Wednesday, August 8th with a rock concert by The Stingray Band and a “bring your picnic lunch” on the Library lawn. For more program and registration information, watch your mailboxes for a June delivery of Footnotes, the Library’s quarterly newsletter, or go online to sign up for a free e-newsletter version of Footnotes on the Library’s website www.library.scarborough.me.us. Programs will also be listed on the Event Calendar on the Library website, or stop by the Library for more information.
