The Scarborough High softball team continues to hover atop the Western Maine Class A standings at 15-0. The Red Storm was ahead of No. 2 Biddeford (14-1), No. 3 South Portland (12-2) and No. 4 Deering (12-3). Those four teams will be involved in Friday’s Southwestern Maine Activities Association playoff being held at Scarborough.
Scarborough will face off against Deering in one semifinal and Biddeford will take on South Portland in the other semifinal. Both contests will take place at 4 p.m. The semifinal winners will meet for the league championship at 7 p.m. Last year, Scarborough won the SMAA crown with a victory over Biddeford.
The Red Storm closed out the regular season at Bonny Eagle on Tuesday afternoon. Thanks to the combined pitching of seniors Kelsey Griffin and Caitlin LeBorgne, the Storm haven’t been scored on since May 9 when Marshwood plated two runs in a 16-2 Scarborough victory. Since that time, the Storm have shutout seven different opponents and they’ve outscored them by a combined 49-0.
South Portland was at 12-2 starting this week with remaining games against Sanford on Monday, May 28, and the regular season finale on Tuesday, May 29. The Riots have reeled off 12 straight wins since opening the season with back-to-back losses to Biddeford and Scarborough. On three successive days last week, the Riots topped Deering (2-0), Cheverus (11-3) and McAuley (9-0).
Both Scarborough and South Portland will get byes into the West A quarterfinals, which get underway Thursday, June 7.
Cape ranked second heading into tourney
Cape Elizabeth’s softball team was at 12-3 with two games left in the regular season – at York on Tuesday, May 29 and at Traip Academy one day later. The Capers were No. 2 in the recently released West B Heal Point standings, which means they’ll get a bye into the regional quarterfinals scheduled for Thursday, June 7.
The defending regional champs have won four straight since suffering back-to-back losses to Gray-New Gloucester and Lake Region in mid-May. Last week, the Capers rolled over four solid opponents (Freeport, Falmouth, Greely and Wells) as they prepare for post-season play.
