Ted Jankowski announced Thursday he would be resigning as city manager of South Portland.

Jankowski has held the position since September. His resignation will take effect May 31.

Jankowski received an early performance review this month because of ongoing concerns about his management.

“I have started to establish friendships with a number of employees and residents and am looking forward to watching them grow without the burden of being the manager,” said Jankowski.

Mayor Claude Morgan said Jankowski helped steer the city to strong economic footing during his tenure. “His efforts are greatly appreciated,” said Morgan. “The city manager’s considerable experience in the private sector and government will be missed.”

Morgan said the city intends to appoint Assistant City Manager Jim Gailey as the interim city manager, until a replacement can be found. The City Council is expected to accept Jankowski’s resignation and appoint Gailey at its next council meeting.
