Author-illustrator Brian Lies will read “Bats at the Beach,” his 2006 New York Times best-selling children’s book, Sunday, June 24, from 1-3 p.m., at the Scarborough Public Library.
Families are invited to dress in beach attire and meet Lies, who will talk about the story’s development and show some original paintings. He will also have his famous “Batsmobile” (a Jeep topped with a 12-foot happy bat), solve bat puzzles and make edible bugmallows.
Lies has written and illustrated many books for children. His award-winning work appears regularly in children’s magazines and galleries around the country. He lives in Duxbury, Mass., with his wife and daughter.
The event is part of the Maine Reads Festival in Portland, June 22-24. A portion of proceeds from his book is being donated to Bat Conservation International.
All Friends of Scarborough Library Programs are free and open to the public. For more information, call 883-4723 or go to the Web site www.scarboroughcrossroads.org/libraryfriends.
