After serving his two-year term as Scarborough Community Chamber president, Kevin Freeman has handed his gavel to Bob Nadeau, formerly the vice president. Nadeau, who works at Gorham Savings Bank in Scarborough, and Freeman, who works for Pizzagalli Construction in Portland, are both natives of northern Maine and residents of Scarborough. They have both been members of the chamber since the late 1990s. On Monday, they sat down with the Current to share some insight into their work, the chamber and themselves.

Q: Why did you decide to serve on the board of the chamber?

Kevin Freeman: When I first joined the chamber, I was working for a Scarborough company. It’s my way to give back to the town I live in. I’ve kept my affiliation with Scarborough.

Bob Nadeau: I’ve always been involved in some sort of way in giving back to the community. You can make your community a better place to live in. The chamber’s come a long way in the last four to five years, but we’re still trying to get the message out.

Q: What are/were your goals as president of the chamber?

Freeman: My two years was trying to increase our visibility. We’ve increased our membership. We’ve expanded our programs. The summer concerts in the park have reached a whole different stratosphere. We’re poised for Bob to bring more depth to the organization and bring more return to our members.

Nadeau: My biggest goal is to not screw up too badly. Kevin and people before have done a lot to move forward. You just want to continue that momentum. We all know Scarborough is going to change quite a bit in the next few years. Advocacy is going to be one of our major themes.

Q: How would you describe your relationship?

Freeman: We’re a couple of northern Mainers that transplanted down. We have that in common. There are a lot of people who did what we did. It makes for a diverse community.

Nadeau: We share a common philosophy about giving back to the community.

Q: If you won $10 million in the lottery, how would you invest it in Scarborough’s business community?

Nadeau: We would just continue to try to provide programs and support.

Freeman: I think we’d love to support the seniors and the kids. We would increase our scholarship. We would love to have a paid position here in town – a storefront that says Scarborough Community Chamber.

Nadeau: Do we have to pay taxes on that?

Q: If you were a kitchen appliance, what would you be?

Freeman: I guess I’m kind of built like a refrigerator, but I’m reliable and I always keep my cool.

Nadeau: I’m a blender. I just try to get everybody involved, take the talents out of all of them and make something happen.

Q: What actor would play you in the movie of your life?

Freeman: Well, a young Clint Eastwood would play me. It would probably be John Candy, but I’d like to think it would be Clint Eastwood.

Nadeau: Robert Redford. I’ve always enjoyed his acting. He blends seriousness with humor and that’s what I try to do.

Q: If the chamber had a motto, what would it be?

Freeman: Scarborough is open for business.

As Bob Nadeau, left, takes over for Kevin Freeman, as president of the Scarborough Community Chamber, the two men sat down with The Current to discuss why they are involved in the organization, the future of it and which actor they would pick to play them in a movie.
