Gorham 34

Westbrook 0

All eyes in the Maine high school football world will be fixated on the Gorham vs. Bonny Eagle game coming up this Friday night in Gorham. For Coach Dave Kilborn and his Gorham Rams, they had to make sure they focused on the task at hand and didn’t overlook the Westbrook Blue Blazes last Saturday afternoon.

Any worries for Kilborn’s squad were put to rest after the second play of the game, when quarterback Evan Nash hit Justin Villacci with an 83-yard touchdown pass to put Gorham up, 6-0. Villacci had two more touchdown receptions from Nash by the end of the first half, and Gorham cruised to a 34-0 win over the Blazes, improving their record to a perfect 7-0.

“It’s a good tribute to the guys, and I thought they did a great job (today),” said Kilborn, on going to 7-0.

Kilborn made sure that the Rams kept their attention on the Blazes during the week, and to not get caught up in any hype for the game against the Scots.

“Class A has great football. Any team you play, it’s going to be good football,” said Kilborn. “They’re never going to give up, and they’ll never let you take an easy win. You’ve got to earn everything you get.”

After opening with an 83-yard pass for a touchdown, Nash later hit Villacci with another touchdown pass in the first quarter, this one for 64 yards, making the score 12-0 in favor of the Rams.

On Gorham’s first possession of the second quarter, tailback Duncan Allen scored on an 80-yard scamper, giving the Rams a commanding 18-0 lead. Allen finished the game with 112 yards of rushing.

Nash’s third touchdown pass to Villacci was for 37-yards, and after a successful two point conversion, this brought the score to 26-0. Nash threw for 184 yards, and Villacci had 238 yards of total offense, between the big catches and the rushing attack he provided.

“We take what the defense gives us, and we were able to capitalize,” said Kilborn. “Next week, you never know, it might be something different that we find that the defense will give us.”

Even with a flawless record, what Gorham did on the field was far from perfect. Westbrook’s Dom DiBiase had an interception in the first quarter, and the Blazes forced six fumbles during the contest.

“I think we played great defensively, we just let up some big plays,” said Westbrook head coach Daryle Weiss. “I look forward to their showdown with Bonny Eagle next week. I know Coach Kilborn has some things to work on this week if they’re going to be ready for Bonny Eagle.”

Clearing up the fumbles will be key for Gorham, and “…the guys know that,” said Kilborn. “We know that we’ve got to shake those things up.”

Gorham went up 34-0 in the third quarter on a 29-yard rush from Carson Walker.

The Blazes came close to the end zone on the last play of the third, when DiBiase broke through the middle and nearly went the entire length of the field, rushing for an impressive 89 yards. DiBiase finished the game with an interception and 122 yards on the ground.

Westbrook will finish their season against Windham on the road on Friday night.

“(Windham head coach) Matt Perkins is a real good friend of mine, and it’s going to be fun to coach against him,” said Weiss. “We’ve got a good relationship, and it should be a real battle.”

As for Gorham, they will be home against the Scots Friday night in a battle against two undefeated teams.

“It’s the last regular season game, it’s going to help us decide where we are at in the playoffs, what seeds we get. That’s how we’re looking at it,” said Kilborn.
