South Portland native starring for Colby-Sawyer hoop team

Andrew Cousins of South Portland is looking to be one of the key members of the Colby-Sawyer basketball team this upcoming season.

Cousins, a junior at the New London, N.H. college, started 18 games for the Chargers last season averaging 9.8 points per game.

“Andrew is an athletic defender on the perimeter and a good shooter,” said Colby-Sawyer coach Bill Foti. “When he shoots the ball well, he gives us a different dimension.”

The Chargers’ roster has a definite Maine flavor to it this season, besides Cousins, there are four other Mainers on the squad.

Sophomore Will Clemmer of Windham rejoins the Chargers for his second season with the team. “Will clearly had the best off-season of anyone this past year,” Foti said. “He has worked very hard to transform his body and has forced his way into the rotation.”

Joining Cousins and Clemmer on the Colby-Sawyer squad this season are sophomore Andre Tracy of Ellsworth and freshmen Caleb Jordan of North Yarmouth and Brandon Carbone of Portland.

Scarborough swimmer wins three events for Alfred University

Page Beecher of Scarborough, a senior at Alfred University, won three events at a recent meet to help the Saxons’ mens swimming team sustain a 14-meet winning streak.

Beecher won the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle to help the Saxons to a 146-97 win over RIT last month.

Beecher wasn’t the only Maine swimmer helping the Saxons to victory. Junior Brian Argo of Gray won two individual events, the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke in the same meet. Argo was also a member of the relay team that swam to victory in the 400-yard medley relay.
