The old brick mansion at 17 Brook St., left photo, was built in 1889 by Joseph B. Walker, a prominent citizen of Westbrook. Walker was a farmer and a brickmaker and the bricks for this house came from his own back yard. The second floor of the house (nearest the barn) was used for dances and social gatherings. The Walker family eventually sold the house and in the 1940s this house became the Bishop Nursing Home, which was maintained into the 1970s. The Arnie Hansen Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center was located here for a period of time after the nursing home. Under a subsequent succession of owners, the house and barn started to deteriorate. Paul (Bucky) Holloway and his wife, Pauline, purchased the property in the early 1990s and they restored the house to much of its original elegant splendor. The Holloways sold the property and it remains a private residence.
