The Scarborough girls’ basketball team finished up a strong regular season with a 13-5 mark to earn themselves the No. 4 seed in the Class A West tournament. Last year, Scarborough was eliminated in the preliminary round. This year, they are guaranteed to go further than that, since their seed gives them a bye directly into the quarterfinals.

The Red Storm were strong this season with several decisive victories over playoff-bound teams. They opened up 3-0 this season before running into Rachele Burns and the Gorham Rams and suffering their first loss of the year. They fell to 3-2 with a loss to Deering in the following game.

The Red Storm got back to their winning ways with a big win over Massabesic, 72-53. They followed that win up with another over perennial contender Biddeford. The Storm fell to 5-4 after consecutive losses to Westbrook and South Portland.

Halfway through the season, they were just one game above .500. Since then, however, they have been on a tear. They ripped off seven straight wins to catapult themselves into a first round bye before finishing with a win and a loss in their last two games.

The Storm are riding a wave of momentum into the tourney and will kick things off against Westbrook in the quarterfinals. The Storm and the Blue Blazes will square off on Monday, Feb. 18 at the Portland Expo at 7 p.m.
