Songs and sketches

The Windham School District Art Show, featuring work by students from kindergarten through 12th-grade, runs May 12-16 at Windham High School.

During the opening Monday, May 12, from 5:30-8 pm., there will be exhibitions of student art work, demonstrations and the Windham Chamber Singers will be joined by the third-grade chorus from Windham Primary School for a performance at 6:30 p.m.

Happy anniversary

A celebration was held at the Landing Restaurant in Windham for the 80th wedding anniversary of Leon “Bud” and Myrle Cooper who were married in April 30, 1928.

They have lived in Windham since 1943. After moving to Windham Leon was drafted into World War II even though he had three young children. Cooper ran a home building and remodeling business which became became L.C. Cooper Company after his son Buzz took over.

Myrle was town librarian for many years when the new library opened. Bud was with the Lions Club of Windham when it raised money for the first ambulance. He was one of the first trained emergency medical technicians in town and volunteered for years.

The Coopers have three children, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. They are presently living at Birchwood assisted living apartments in Portland. They lived in Silver Springs, Fla. for many years in the winter.

Help for veterans

Robyn Shepard, a Maine veterans advocate, will be at the Windham Veterans Center May 14 from 9-11 a.m. He will be assisting veterans in applying for benefits. The service is free and no appointment is needed.

Help for the Homefront

Operation Homefront-Maine needs help. It has joined with Dollar Tree Stores and Ryder Transportation to get much-needed cleaning supplies to our Fort Kent neighbors.

Organization representatives went to Fort Kent Saturday and talked to home and business owners and asked what the needs are. The organization is now asking patrons of Dollar Tree to help clean up Fort Kent and surrounding towns by purchasing cleaning products and donating them to Operation Homefront-Maine. Cash donations to help fuel the truck are also welcome. Check

Tea time

There will be a tea at the Windham Public Library Tuesday, June 10, at 1:30 p.m. No reservations are needed and all ages are welcome. For more information please call Laurel or Barbara at 892-1908.

Farmers market open

The Lakes Region Farmers Market is open for the summer, every Saturday from 8-noon in the Manchester School parking lot.

Back home

Maj. Allen Laughlin of Epping, N.H. has returned safely from Iraq. The family would to say thank you for all your prayers for Laughlin and the continued prayers for those men and women still serving our country.

Laughlin is married to Patty Davidson formerly of Windham and graduate of the Windham school system. He is the son-in-law of Dick and Gale Davidson of Windham.

Timely tea

Valerie and Linsey Chapman participants in the 4-H and Operation Military Kids Program joined Maine First Lady Karen Baldacci and Maj. Gen. John Libby of the Maine National Guard for a tea where Baldacci proclamed April as Military Child Month.

The tea was given on behalf of Gov. John Baldacci, who could not be present. It was a wonderful afternoon.
