Local Memorial Day 2008 activities include:

Cape Elizabeth

The Memorial Day Parade begins at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Fowler Road and Old Ocean House Road, continues north on Route 77, then left onto Scott Dyer Road to the War Veterans Memorial between the Pond Cove and middle schools. A brief ceremony and laying of the wreath will be held at the monument. Following the ceremony, residents and guests are invited to an open house at the Town Center Fire Station.

The parade will include members of the Cape Elizabeth Police, Fire and Rescue Departments, the Water Extrication Team, Lions Club, middle school marching band, and Boy and Girl Scouts. Marshal is Jim Gibbons, who was recently honored with the Silver Star for combat action in Vietnam.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the Cape Elizabeth High School cafeteria. Parking for the cafeteria is to the back of the high school.

South Portland

The Memorial Day Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Southern Maine Community College parking lot at the east end of Broadway, and continues west on Broadway to Cottage Road, turn rights and ends at Legion Square, where a short ceremony will be held.

Seniors at South Portland High School will be selling balloons, pinwheels and flags along the parade route to raise money for Project Graduation. Project Graduation.

Scarborough

A parade, featuring members of the town fire department, scouts, veterans in antique cars and other local civic organizations, begins at 10 a.m. at Scarborough High School. It continues on Route 1 to the Maine Veterans’ Home for a ceremony, where names of World War II veterans will be read and the Scarborough High School band and Kora Temple Highlanders will provide music.

Libby-Mitchell Post No. 76 American Legion will hold services at local cemeteries and monuments starting at 8 a.m., and host an open house at noon.
