Windham was still New Marblehead, Mass., when Sam Elder built his house on River Road in 1753. He came here in 1743 and settled on Lot 40. The Historical Society in Windham receives many calls from people asking about the oldest house. If this isn’t the oldest, it is one of them. The nearby Parson Smith house wasn’t built until 1764 and by then, the settlement (with 29 families, a church and a school) had become Windham, Mass. (Courtesy of Windham Historical Society).
