The Cape Elizabeth boys lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker on the road at Greely on Friday, coming back from a 5-1 deficit to take a late 6-5 lead before losing 7-6 in overtime.

Just 20 seconds into overtime, the Rangers’ Steve Chase got the ball in front of the Capers’ net and beat goalie Jack Roos for the game-winner.

The loss was especially tough for the Capers, coming on the heels of a ferocious second-half comeback that saw them erase a 5-1 Greely lead to grab the lead themselves.

The game was tight for much of the first period, but Greely exploded for three goals in the final 49.2 seconds to take a 3-0 lead. The Capers cut the lead to 3-1 when attacker Mikey Holden fired one home with eight minutes left in the second period.

But Greely answered right back on an Eric Thompson goal with 6:49 left in the half to make it 4-1. The Rangers grabbed a 5-1 lead with 29.6 seconds left in the half when Ethan Crossen scored.

But Cape came out of the halftime break determined to make a game of it.

The comeback started when the Capers’ Zach Belden took the ball behind the Rangers’ net, circled around and jammed it home to make it 5-2 with 10:52 left in the third. Belden got a second goal about two minutes later when Cape’s Tom Michaud picked off a pass near midfield and worked it to Belden, who scored to make it 5-3 with 8:45 left.

Less than a minute later, Michaud and Belden connected again, with Belden getting his third goal to make it 5-4 with 7:55 left. The Capers tied the game with just 1:23 left in the third when Holden got his second to make it 5-5.

The Capers took their first lead of the game with 8:18 left in regulation when, coming off a Greely penalty, Cape’s Johnny Hays found Mike Ott in front and Ott scored to give the Capers a 6-5 lead.

The Capers had to sustain a furious Greely attack, with Roos playing strong in the net as the Capers looked to upset the top-ranked Rangers. But, the Rangers finally got one by Roos with just 2:33 left in regulation as Leland Copenhagen beat Roos to tie the game at six.

Both teams had chances at late goals at the end of regulation, but were not able to score. The loss moved the Capers to 7-3 on the season, good for second in the latest Class B Heal Points.
