CUTLINE ONLY

Ten years later, Westbrook resident Trudy Hartford’s vision of a perennial garden welcoming people into the city from Gorham is finally realized. “I’m so pleased,” she said Tuesday about the garden being planted in the area of open space where Saco Street, Main Street and William Clarke Drive meet. Though Hartford contacted the City Council a decade ago with the idea, no one ever got back to her. Last year, she decided to try again and contacted Mayor Bruce Chuluda. With the help of the mayor, the city’s public services department and fellow Westbrook residents who donated their perennials, Hartford finally has the garden she dreamed of. Now, she says, she’s just waiting for a new sign that reads, “Westbrook welcomes you.” Chuluda says the city is in the process of getting one up.
