It took two days, with an intervening rain delay, but Libby-Mitchell was eliminated from the American Legion playoffs on Tuesday.

The Zone 4 champions, with players from Scarborough and Bonny Eagle high schools, trailed Gayton Post 10-3 with seven innings complete in the nine-inning contest in Augusta Monday night. The score remained the same when the game was completed the next day.

Libby-Mitchell won its first game in the tournament on Saturday, 12-9 over Bessey Motors, as it rallied for five runs in the ninth inning. In Game 2 on Sunday, Libby-Mitchell fell to Gardiner 9-8 in extra innings after taking an 8-4 lead in the top of the 11th, only to have Gardiner rally for five in the bottom half.

Against Gayton, which draws from Lewiston and Lisbon, Libby-Mitchell scored a run in each of the first three innings and led 3-1 entering the bottom of the third. But Gayton scored three in the third, two in the sixth and four in the seventh to take control before the dark clouds that hovered on the horizon for a couple innings finally moved over the field and opened up.

Jimmy Rouse led off the game for Libby-Mitchell with a single to left field, advanced to third on Lincoln Sanborn’s single, and scored on Jake Rutt’s RBI groundout. Brendan Sullivan started the second inning with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on Tim Grovo’s sacrifice, and scored on a single up the middle by Neil Ravin.

Sanborn started the third off with a double to left and scored on Chris Bernard’s double to deep center field. Gayton starter Joe Sullivan settled in in the fourth inning, allowing only two more hits before the rain came.

Mekae Hyde drove in five of Gayton’s 10 runs. He had an RBI fielder’s choice in the first inning, doubled in the third to drive in two runs to tie the game at 3-3, and added a two-run single in the sixth to make it 6-3.

Bernard, Sanborn and Ravin each had a pair of hits through seven innings for Libby-Mitchell.

Brian Moskevich started on the mound for Libby-Mitchell. He was relieved by AJ Ellison with two outs in the sixth. Ellison retired the first batter he faced to get out of the sixth, but struggled in the seventh, when he was relieved by Brendan Sullivan with two outs.

Sullivan’s first pitch was a wild one, which allowed Alex Wong to score. He got the inning’s third out when he covered home after a pitch got away from the catcher, Rutt. Rutt threw to Sullivan, who tagged out Greg Labonte trying to score from third.
