It was close for a while, but the Capers pulled it out.
Thanks to a 20-point third quarter, Cape Elizabeth rolled to its first win of the season Friday night, rolling to a 32-12 win over York at Hannaford Field.
The Capers were led by junior Brenden Shields, who scored two touchdowns and set up another Cape touchdown with a 58-yard run early in the second half, as the Capers used the big third quarter to break a 12-12 halftime tie.
The win was actually a come-from-behind win for Cape as York jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and led 12-6 at one point in the first half.
Shields tied the game at six in the first quarter on a 35-yard run. After another York touchdown made it 12-6, Cape quarterback Ezra Wolfinger tied it again with a one-yard TD run.
Just as the second half was getting underway, Shields struck again with his big 58-yard run. The Capers’ Jack Barber scored on the next play to give Cape the lead for good.
The Capers are on the road this Friday night as they travel to Fryeburg to take on Fryeburg Academy.
Last season, the Capers broke open what had been a close game with the Raiders, riding 27 second half points to a 48-14 win.
