The Cape Elizabeth Alternative Energy Committee decided Sept. 10 to designate each member of the panel tasks that would advance energy efficiencies in the town.

Such duties would include analyzing the costs and benefits for installing LED street lights, reducing heating costs in public buildings, and implementing alternative energies and converting town facilities from oil to natural gas, woodchips, propane and wind power.

The panel had commissioned a Harvard University study to conduct a strategic analysis of alternative energy options, especially in the Cape Elizabeth public schools. The outcome was a robust cost-benefit analysis of five alternative energy technologies and ways for the committee to evaluate these.

The committee consists of seven citizens appointed by the Town Council, supported by the Cape Elizabeth facilities manager and representatives from the Greater Portland Council of Governments.
