Cape Elizabeth 3

Gray-New Gloucester 0

The Cape Elizabeth field hockey team did everything right Monday in a 3-0 win over visiting Gray-New Gloucester. The Capers got three goals from three different players and allowed only one shot on goal.

“Our defense has been very strong,” said Cape head coach Darci Holland. “I think that’s one thing we try to take pride in, just really focusing on the fundamentals and knowing where our teammates are, and getting it to them on defense and clearing it out and having the attitude of not letting it get in.”

The game was scoreless for the first 10 minutes, but it was clear the Capers were on top of their game as the early minutes were spent near the Patriot net. Cape finally got on the board with 18:50 to go in the first half when Patriot goalie Bethany Haines was screened and Hannah Johnson was able to put the ball in the back of the cage for a 1-0 Cape lead.

The Capers had several more good scoring chances in the first half but Haines was up to the challenge and turned away every shot she saw for the rest of the half, including several rebound opportunities.

Cape was able to keep the 1-0 lead into the break thanks to the offense keeping the pressure on. Cape goalkeeper Katie Mowles was never pressured, as the Capers were able to stay on the attack.

Emma Logan doubled Cape’s lead just a few minutes into the second half. Haines made a save but the rebound fell right to Logan’s stick and she put back the rebound to give her team a 2-0 advantage.

“I’m very happy with the second half of the game,” Holland said. “I think they came out a little flat in the first half. In the second half they got it together and the passing improved. We actually have had some trouble capitalizing in the circle. We’ve been getting the shots off we just can’t score the goals. So it was good to see them finally put the ball in the goal today.”

With 15:02 to go, the Capers sent a long shot into the circle that Haines kicked out. But Bella Robinson was racing hard to the cage and chipped the rebound into the net with a reverse stick. That gave Cape a 3-0 lead with time running down for Gray-New Gloucester.

“That was awesome,” Holland said of Robinson’s goal. “She hit a reverse chip shot. You don’t see that very often in high school.”

Haines finished the afternoon with 13 saves. Her counterpart, Mowles, ended the day with one save. The Patriots fell to 0-3-1 with the loss and were scheduled to face Lake Region and Falmouth this week. The Capers improved to 2-1-1 with the win and were scheduled to face Yarmouth on Wednesday.
