Another reason not to smoke

On Monday, Sept. 1, at 1:11 a.m., police responded to a motor vehicle accident on Pine Point Road near the nature center. According to police, a 21-year-old Westbrook man was driving a 2008 Lexus on Pine Point Road and smoking a cigarette, when he dropped the cigarette into his lap and it started to burn him. While attempting to remove the burning cigarette from his lap, the man drove into one of the river-like areas of Scarborough Marsh. The driver was fine, police said; the Lexus, which was submerged in salt water until low tide at 6:34 a.m., was not.

Shoe rage

On Monday, Sept. 1 at 2:45 p.m., police responded to a report of an assault at the Scarborough High School Skate Park on Municipal Drive. According to police, one juvenile male had taken shoes belonging to another juvenile male and when the owner of the shoes tried to get them back, a scuffle ensued. The owner of the shoes said he only knew the first name of his antagonizer. No charges have been brought.

Unwanted but wanted

On Monday. Sept. 1, at 6:01 p.m., police responded to a disturbance on Holmes Road. According to police, the female complainant said there was another woman at her home who was harassing her and refusing to leave the property. Police found the second subject sitting under a tree on the property. Police say both subjects pay rent for the home, but the woman sitting under the tree was wanted by police. Police took Yvonne Heathcote, 44, of 162 Holmes Road, into custody on a warrant for unspecified charges.

Wal-Mart shoplifter

On Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 2:39 p.m., police responded to Wal-Mart for a report of of a shoplifter. According to police, a woman was seen leaving a dressing room with fewer articles of clothing than she had entered. The woman then allegedly bypassed the cash registers and walked from the store with $27.43 worth of clothing that she had not paid for. Jamie Poland, 29, of 85 Cumberland Ave., Portland, was arrested and charged with theft.

Unaired footage

On Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 5:20 p.m., police responded to the intersection of Highland and Woodland avenues for a report of a disturbance. According to police, a television news crew was attempting to do a report and a person at the scene was harassing the crew, yelling and screaming obscenities while the crew was attempting to do a live broadcast. The individual was gone when police arrived and police were not able to locate him. The person is described as a man in his 40s walking a Yorkshire terrier.

Laptop missing

On Wednesday, Sept. 3, police responded to a report of a burglary on Pearl Street. According to police, the complainant said he believed someone had entered his residence in the night because a screen was dislodged and his wife’s laptop computer was missing. The case remains under investigation.

Damaged doors

On Wednesday. Sept. 3, at 9:11 a.m., police received a report of vandalism at the Nonesuch Rod and Paddle Club on Black Rock Road. According to police, both the front and rear doors ahd been damaged soemtime between Aug. 28 and Sept. 3. The frame of the back door was cracked and the weatherstripping had been peeled off. The lamininate on the front double door had also been peeled away. Police estimate the two doors sustained a total of $365 in damage.

Empty-handed

On Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 11:27 a.m., police responded to a reported criminal offense at Wal-Mart on Payne Road. A loss prevention officer at the store reported that a man had taken sporting goods and hardware and fled the store into the woods. Police located a man who fit the description of the suspect but he did not have any items in his possession that appeared to have come from Wal-Mart. The incident remains under investigation.

Lost and found

On Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 1:47 p.m. police responded to a report of a stolen purse at Wal-Mart on Payne Road. The purse was eventually located intact, including cash and credit cards. It is believed to have fallen out of the complainant’s shopping cart.

Stop calling

On Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m., police responded to a report of harassment on Ash Swamp Road. A woman reported that her ex-boyfriend has been harassing her by repeatedly calling and e-mailing her. Police advised her of her rights and made contact with the ex-boyfriend to tell him to stop calling.

Shafted

On Friday, Sept. 5, police were informed of the apparent theft of a drive shaft. The complainant, who has a restraining order against her estranged husband, told police that when she had taken her vehicle to get the oil changed, the mechanic noticed that the front drive shaft was missing. The loss of the $500 drive shaft means that the vehicle cannot be put into four-wheel drive. The woman suspects her estranged husband of removing it.

Punched out

On Friday, Sept. 25, at 12:25 p.m., police responded to a report of a domestic assault on Spurwink Road. According to police, a female had punched a male domestic partner at least 12 times. He was transported to Maine Medical Center for treatment. The female was transported to Maine Medical Center for evaluation after threatening suicide. Upon her release she was arrested for domestic violence assault.

Power play

On Friday, Sept. 25, at 3:39 p.m. police responded to Millbrook Road for an identity theft complaint. The victim stated that she had received an electricity shutoff notice in the mail demanding that she pay $1,043 to avoid disconnection of electricity service to a residence in Dorchester, Mass. The complainant called the company that had sent the bill, Nstar, and learned the names and address of the persons receiving the electric service for which she was being billed. The complainant told police she has no idea who the people were and has no idea how they got her personal information. The case remains under investigation.

Gone missing

On Friday, Sept. 5, at 4:05 p.m., police responded to Steve Tucker Home Theaters on Route 1 for a report of a theft. According to police, a 32-inch 1082 Sharp LED television had been left out in the hallway for a short period of time following a delivery of new merchandise and had disappeared. The incident remains under investigation.

Fraud complaint

On Friday, Sept. 5, police responded to Saco Street for a fraud complaint. According to police, the complainant said he had been notified by his bank of $1,200 of suspicious purchases. The complainant did not make the purchases and has filed a report with his bank to that effect so that he will not be held liable. The bank had requested that the complainant file a police report as well.

Telltale odor

On Friday, Sept. 5, at 10:21 p.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked behind Irving Service Station on Route 1. Upon investigation, police detected an odor of marijuana. Upon further investigation, police arrested Alex Kaminski, 21, of Waterboro, on a charge of possession of marijuana.

Romantic tangle

On Saturday, Sept. 6, at 2:11 a.m., police responded to a report of a fight at the Admiral Motel on Route 1. Upon arrival, police met with a female who stated that she had been dating a married man for approximately two years and she had come to the hotel, where he was staying with his wife, to confront him. She stated that he refused to open the door to his room and told her to leave. When she attempted to gain entry by opening a window he pushed her back and she got an abrasion on her arm, police said. Police told the woman not to return to the hotel or she would be arrested. Police then spoke to the husband, who stated he was not sure whether he wanted to remain with the wife or the girlfriend. Police also spoke to the wife, who said she will be getting a protective order against the girlfriend.

Feces smeared

On Saturday, Sept. 6, police responded to a report of vandalism or criminal mischief at the Bessworth School on Municipal Drive. According to police, someone had smeared feces on the inside of a covered playground slide. The feces was not tested to determine whether it was human or animal. Police spoke with someone from the town community services department who recalled seeing about eight juveniles on the playground the previous night who ran off as he approached.

Bike dispute

On Saturday, Sept. 6, at 12:32 p.m., police responded to Orchard Street for a theft complaint. The caller stated that a teenage neighbor had stolen her son’s bike, painted it a different color and put stickers on it. The bike was back in the caller’s possession but not in its original condition. Police spoke with the mother of the suspected neighbor and she advised that her son had altered the bike but did not steal it because he would not do something like that. The complainant said she did not want to press charges.

Date from hell

On Saturday, Sept. 6, at 5:08 p.m., police responded to Elbridge Oliver Way for a harassment complaint. The complainants, a 17-year-old male and his parents, reported that the teen had received two threatening text messages from the father of a girl the teen had taken on a date several weeks earlier. According to the family, the juvenile female, who lives in Saco, had told the boy she was 15, but was in fact only 12. The girl’s father was upset with what had occurred on the date and had filed a report with Saco police and was sending the 17-year-old threatening text messages. According to police, the family was concerned about the harassment and about what might happen to their son, and upset about the girl lying about her age. Police stated they could provide no information on the latter because they had not seen the Saco report.
