Land Trust annual meeting

The Windham Land Trust will hold their annual meeting Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Windham Public Library. The meeting is for election of officers and annual reports. Community supper

A community supper will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, 5-6:30 p.m., at Windham Hill United Church of Christ, 140 Windham Center Road. Italian food will be featured, including lasagna, ziti and more. Price is $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

Historical Society open

Windham Historical Society is open to the public Thursdays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is located in the former town house on Windham Center Road. Visitors can peruse old high school yearbooks, check out various displays and do research on family or topics relating to Windham. On Monday, Sept. 29, Robert Chute, who has recently published a book of prose and poetry about Windham’s early settlers, will present a program at 7 p.m. Chute’s ancestor, Thomas Chute, was one of the town’s first residents. The public is welcome.

Get involved

The local historical society provides a wonderful resource for school children and adults throughout the year. There are many opportunities for volunteering. Stop in when we are open and check it out. You will be surprised at what you might find.

Safety and savings

An AARP driver safety course for drivers 50 years of age and older will be presented on two consecutive Saturdays, October 4 and 11, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., at the Windham Public Library, 217 Windham Center Rd. Participants must attend both days to complete the course. The registration fee is $10 a person and advance registration is required. To register, phone John Hammon, AARP volunteer instructor, at 655-4943. Class size is limited and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis as long as space is available. The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation’s first and largest classroom refresher course designed to meet the safety needs of experienced and mature drivers. It is an eight-hour class that helps drivers learn about defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws, rules of the road and much more. The class also helps older drivers learn how to adjust their driving to age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. Even better, insurance companies in Maine are required by law to give discounts to drivers 55 years of age and older who complete this course.

Monday Night Meals benefit

An Old Fashioned Variety Show will be held Saturday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Windham Assembly of God church, 1051 Roosevelt Trail (Rt. 302) in North Windham. A free will donation will be accepted. All proceeds benefit the Monday Night Meals program. For more information, call Marcia at 650-3769. The Monday Night Meals program is a weekly event, hosted by area churches, that provides both a free home cooked meal and opportunity to foster well-being in the community.

Cancer Support meeting

“How Cancer Affects Family Relationships” will be the topic when the local Cancer Support Group meets Monday, Sept. 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Windham Public Library’s meeting room. Susan Haskell Correia, LCSW will be the presenter. The program is open to anyone who has been affected by cancer personally or through a friend or relative.
