Two local churches are hosting special services Sunday to bless animals, on the Feast of St. Francis Of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment.
At the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church, a dog blessing and walk is scheduled from 1-2 p.m. The Rev. Ruth Morrison will bless each dog individually and then offer dog treats. Each dog also will receive a “Dogument” blessing certificate and bandana.
The blessing will take place in the Outdoor Chapel in the woods at the far end of the church’s parking lot at 280 Ocean House Road. A guided walk through the woods will follow the blessing.
Donations will be taken to benefit the Animal Welfare Society in West Kennebunk.
In Scarborough, St. Nicholas Episcopal Church invites owners to bring family pets (or a picture) to the annual blessing, starting at 9:30 a.m.
The celebration will take place rain or shine. In case of rain, the service will be moved indoors and special accommodations (rugs and mats) will be in place for the guests.
