A Palmyra man has pleaded not guilty in the 1995 murder of a Portland man with Windham ties.

Steven R. Cutting, 46, entered the plea last week in Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland. Cutting was arrested in August after he allegedly confessed to a relative that he had killed 36-year-old William Greenwood on the night of April 30, 1995.

A bail hearing was set for Nov. 7. He is being held at York County Jail in Alfred.

After his arrest, Cutting told a television reporter that he shot Greenwood in self-defense after the two men got into an altercation. Investigators said Greenwood, whose mother and stepfather, Millie and Linwood Stubbs, live in Windham, had accepted a ride home from Cutting on the night of April 30, 1995. Greenwood’s body was found the next morning behind a trucking company on Warren Avenue in Portland.
