There’s only one remaining undefeated boys high school basketball team in the Pine Tree State, and it is Cape Elizabeth’s adversary in Friday night’s Class B state championship.

The Windjammers of Camden Hills enter the game with a perfect 21-0 record. Unlike the 17-4 Capers, who seemed to have had at least one nail biter a week in the Western Maine Conference, Camden Hills was never really tested this winter. Only one Windjammer victory was by fewer than 10 points – a 64-55 win over rival Rockland on the road in the regular-season finale. When the teams met again for the Eastern Maine crown, Camden Hills won handily, 62-37.

A year ago, the Windjammers were knocked out in the regional finals by Maranacook, which went on to beat Cape 56-46 for the gold ball. Under longtime coach Jeff Hart, Camden Hills has won three Class B titles this decade and played for another.

On paper, Camden Hills has it all. The team is big and fast, talented and deep, can score inside and out. Senior forward Gordon Fischer, who stands 6’6″ and scored the 1,000th point of his career earlier this season, was named the player of the year in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference B division. He was joined on the all-conference first team by Tyler McFarland (a 6’5″ sophomore center) and Graham Safford (a 6′ sophomore guard). Senior guard Keifer Lammi (6’3″) was named to the second team.

On paper, Cape is a decided underdog. But the Capers had to knock off West No. 1 Greely and No. 2 Falmouth just to get a shot at Camden Hills. They’ve been tested again and again during the season. Alex Bowe, Johnny Messina and Andrew Dickey remember well what it’s like to play for a gold ball. This time it’s not up in Bangor under a leaky roof. It’s in their own backyard, on a Cumberland County Civic Center court on which they’re getting pretty comfortable.

Game time is 9 p.m.
