Joseph Moreshead, 18, of South Portland has been honored for his volunteer service with a state-level Certificate of Excellence from the 2009 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Moreshead was nominated for this award by Cheverus High School in Portland, where he is a senior.

The award is presented annually by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Moreshead also has received a President’s Volunteer Service Award from the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.

Moreshead earned his awards by his work with the Haiti Solidarity Club, a Cheverus club. The club’s primary goals are to raise awareness about global poverty and to help the poor.

“I helped to run the Fair Trade Awareness table in October, wrote letters to the editor about the Darfur genocide and traveled to the Dominican Republic last spring to work with disabled Haitian refugees,” said Moreshead.

John Mullen, Principal of Cheverus High School, said “Joe is an outstanding scholar athlete and a gentleman who cares passionately about the well being of those in need.”
