Former FAME director slated for confirmation
BRUNSWICK — The Town Council on Monday met the leading candidate to become Brunswick’s new director of economic development.
The council was introduced to David Markovchick, a business development manager for GE Public Finance and former director of the Finance Authority of Maine, during a 40-minute executive session. Markovchick, a Mt. Vernon resident, emerged as the finalist for the position that was vacated by Mathew Eddy in December.
Acting Town Manager Gary Brown said Markovchick was chosen from 45 applicants. Brown would not be specific about how many applicants he interviewed.
If confirmed by the Town Council at their April 28 meeting, Markovchick would start in June. Brown said Markovchick plans to commute from Mt. Vernon.
According to his resume, Markovchick has spent the last eight years at GE Public Finance creating financing arrangements for real estate and equipment for non-profits and state and local governments. His resume says such deals ranged between $2 million and $60 million.
At GE, Markovchick was recognized as the company’s top producer in three out of seven years among a pool of 20 representatives. Markovchick’s resume also says he managed and closed $72 million in transactions in 2008.
Prior to joining GE, Markovchick was the director of business development at FAME, the state agency that helps small- and medium-sized businesses access taxable and tax-free bond markets.
Markovchick joined the agency in 1984, a year after it was created. He was business development director between 1993 and 2001, when he coordinated 15 commerical programs aimed toward expanding the tax base and job growth.
Markovchick also created the Credit Enhanced Umbrella Bond Program, which provided financing to manufacturers “with borrowing needs as small as $500,000.”
He also served as a loan officer at FAME. Prior to that he earned his bachelor and master’s degrees at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
