PORTLAND — Phyllis Virginia (Ford) Mitton, 89, died May 22 at Mercy Hospital in Portland. 

She was born on July 10, 1919, in Hartland, daughter of Bertha (Halliday) and Carroll L. Ford.

In 1940, she married Garold C. Mitton and lived in Dexter for 15 years where their four children were born.

She was a graduate of the University of Maine in Portland and taught second grade at Grove Street and Morse Street schools in Freeport for 25 years.  For 53 years, she was a Yarmouth resident.

She enjoyed learning, painting and studying the Bible. Her children will remember her as a good listener, loving, generous and a competitive player in sports and table games.

She is survived by four children, Gerald P. Mitton of Windham, Janet B. Foley of New Gloucester, Judy A. Metzger of Bethlehem, Penn., Joan E. Davis of Cambria, Calif.; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; her sister, Dorothy Kraft of Kittery, and her brother, Floyd Ford of Palm City, Fla.; and a brother-in-law, Brad Mitton of Taunton, Mass.

There will be a graveside service at Riverside Cemetery in Yarmouth at 11 a.m., June 27, followed by fellowship and refreshments at her Yarmouth home.

Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
