ORR’S ISLAND — Kenneth C. Cary, 84, died May 22.

On Feb. 27, 1925, he was born to William and Helen Cary in Newark, N.J.

He attended Rutgers University in New Jersey and Bates College in Lewiston.

After serving in the U.S. Army, he married Susan Crombie. They moved to Orr’s Island in 1948 and co-founded Camp Rutledge, a summer camp for boys.

A few years later, they moved to New Jersey and owned and operated a restaurant with his brother until he retired in 1984 and returned to Maine.

His lifelong interests included botany and zoology, and he was an avid fisherman and woodworker.

He was predeceased by his wife Susan and daughter Carolyn Haskell.

He is survived by son Bob and his wife Lois of Orr’s Island, daughter Cynthia Hammond of Auburn, son Kenneth Cary of Flemington, N.J.; son-in-law Richard Haskell of Farmington; eight grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial waterfront ceremony and reception will be held at the family home on Orr’s Island at 3 p.m., June 27.
