The Scarborough High softball team is finding Mother Nature to be a fierce opponent on its quest for the Class A state title.

The Western Maine champion Red Storm (18-1) has had its state championship game against Eastern Maine champ Skowhegan (20-1) postponed four times in recent days. The game was not played by the Current’s deadline. The latest update from the Maine Principals’ Association (MPA) prior to deadline had the game scheduled for Wednesday night in Brewer.

Scarborough and Skowhegan were originally scheduled to play on Saturday at noon at Cony High School in Augusta, but heavy rains on Friday led the MPA to push the game time back to 4 p.m. to allow the fields to dry out.

By Saturday morning, as the rain continued to fall, the MPA again postponed the game, this time without a makeup time or location in place.

On Monday morning, the MPA Web site (www.mpa.cc) posted an announcement that the game would be played at 7 p.m. that night at Brewer High School’s Coffin Field. In the afternoon, however, an update was posted announcing that the game was moved to Tuesday. On Tuesday morning, with rain still in the forecast for most of the day, the MPA moved the game once again, this time to Wednesday night in Brewer.

No. 1 Scarborough reached the state championship with a 2-0 victory over rival South Portland in the Western Maine finals on June 17. Freshman pitcher Mo Hannan twirled a one-hitter to earn the victory, striking out 11. Reegan Brackett and Heather Carrier had RBI singles for the Storm. Sophomore Alexis Bogdanovich was strong on the hill for the No. 3 Red Riots (16-4), striking out six while going the distance.

The Red Storm defeated Skowhegan for the 2007 Class A state championship, 2-0. Last season, No. 1 Scarborough fell to Biddeford in the regional championship.
