The Scarborough Planning Board on Monday, Aug. 31, listened to a proposal by Marden’s to open a mammoth store in the former Wal-Mart site on Payne Road, but made no decision on the matter.

Instead, said Town Planner Dan Bacon, the board asked Marden’s to return to the board with more information about its design plans and on how it would address needed improvements at the site, such as an access driveway and sidewalks.

Marden’s is expected to come back before the board on Sept. 21, Bacon said. The board’s meetings are at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

Paul LePage, Marden’s general manager, could not be reached before deadline for this story. LePage has said Marden’s hopes to open the Scarborough store this fall. Bacon said the Planning Board seemed receptive to a proposal that Marden’s could open the store in the fall and phase in some of the improvements later.

The new store would be 119,000 square feet, the largest facility yet for the Maine discount retailer. Its other 14 stores are located throughout Maine, in communities ranging from Sanford to Madawaska.
